Hamsters are popular pets that do not require special care, it’s easy to keep these animals at home, and they do not cause their owners too much trouble. Watching a hamster's behavior is pure pleasure.
Rodent pets are often chosen for children because they can cope with caring for them. Hamsters do not require a walk and they do not leave fur on all objects at home, but at the same time, they are very beautiful and funny.
At the same time, these pets are quite fragile, and irritable and tend to run away, which can make life difficult for their owners. We tell you how to take care of a hamster step by step.
A properly equipped cage is the main condition for keeping a rodent.
The cage for the hamster should be spacious enough and safe for the pet. The size should be chosen taking into account the breed of the pet. The material is also important: cages with wooden parts are not suitable for rodents in principle.
The grid should be metal - only stainless steel, since zinc and copper can cause serious health problems when ingested by a pet. It is best to buy a cage with a tray made of food-grade plastic and stainless-steel bars covered with animal-safe paint. A hamster needs an area of 40×30×30 cm for a full-fledged life. A larger size is great, but if the cage is smaller, then you need to provide your pet with periodic walks outside the metal bars.
The pallet of the cage should be plastic - it is more hygienic and convenient than wooden options.
The hamster's housing must be equipped with:
litter;
wheel;
a place to sleep;
a drinker and a feeder.
The door of the cage should be located on the side or top. Immediately after purchasing the cage, it’s necessary to check how securely it closes so a hamster cannot open it on its own. You have to keep an eye on the pet - some hamsters manage to slip even into a small gap between the door and the cage.
For pets of different sexes to live together, it is recommended to buy a cage at least 50 cm long and with 2-3 floors.
Hamsters are very fertile, and if you get a pair, be sure to expect offspring.
Special care for small animals is not required: the female copes with this perfectly on her own.
But it is better to leave the hamster dad out of the cage while their babies are small.
A special filler made of moisture-absorbing material, for example, pressed sawdust, is used as a litter. This will keep the animal healthy, and the owners — a fresh smell in the room. A wheel is a must-have attribute for a hamster. In the wild, these animals run for several miles at night, so a domestic hamster should not deny himself this pleasure. Choose a wheel of the appropriate size, with transverse protrusions and a bottom without a grid.
As a shelter and a place to sleep, you can put a special house, half a coconut, as well as throw cotton wool, sticks, and hay on the hamster so that the rodent can build a home for himself to his taste. Add elements to build the nest, such as scraps of cloth, and hay (but don't use too much hay or straw, just a handful, for a hamster it's like a lump of sugar for us).
Before starting to clean the cage, it is necessary to talk about the safety of the pet. Transfer it to a playpen, a walking ball, a box, or another place from which it will not run away or get lost.
Remove the litter. Unfasten the top of the cage, take a garbage bag, and collect the litter in it.
Remove toys and accessories from the cage. Put away the food bowl, drinking bowl, and plastic (not wooden) toys. Wash these items with mild soap in warm water. Also, clean the cage as a whole.
After cleaning the cage, fill it with fresh, clean bedding, put feed in a bowl, and fill the drinking bowl with mineral or bottled water.
Place the toys and accessories in the same way as before so your hamster can enjoy them right away!
To make your pet feel at home in a cleaned cage, return the contents (including the hamster's house) to their proper places.
For communication with a hamster to bring only joy, it is worth remembering what can and should not be done with these small animals.
Your pet will feel comfortable if you will:
communicate with the pet in a gentle, soft, and quiet voice.
let the new pet sniff your hand so that he can get used to your smell faster.
slowly, carefully take in your hands, hugging under the front paws.
Try to avoid the following actions:
waving your hands, and making sharp, quick movements toward the pet;
picking up a sleeping hamster (or only after waking up);
shouting at the animal or near its house;
driving into a corner, and then catching sharply, covering with two hands;
leaving on surfaces from which your pet can fall and injure itself;
treating the animal roughly, grabbing, throwing, or beating it.
You can find specialized feed for rodents in any pet store. Most of all, hamsters like cereal crops (oats, wheat, millet), but they will also not refuse to eat fruits and vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Hamsters should not eat citrus fruits, onions, garlic, or white cabbage. Sometimes you can treat your pets with small portions of sweet berries (for example, strawberries or raspberries).
It is necessary to feed the animal twice a day - in the morning and the evening. And, of course, change the water every day.
Of course, change the water every day. If you can't decide on a portion, try putting a little more food, then a little less, watch how your pet eats, and what he likes more, and then you can understand what size will be perfect for your furry friend.
Breeds of hamsters are often similar in appearance, but they have different traits of character and behavior. Different types of hamsters cannot be housed together in one cage. Otherwise, they will fight each other.
The Syrian hamster is the most popular pet hamster in the United States now. You may heard about this breed as the Teddy Bear hamster or Golden hamster. Golden colored fur with a white/cream-colored belly is the main distinguishing feature of these hamsters.
Other popular breeds of hamsters currently include:
Roborovski Hamsters,
Campbell's Hamsters,
Winter White Hamsters,
Chinese Hamsters.
Hamsters do not need special care. If they get very dirty or have an unpleasant smell, then in this case they can be washed with a special shampoo. After bathing, the fur of the animal should be carefully wetted, you can even slightly dry it with a weak stream of air from a hair dryer. Special scissors are used to care for overgrown claws, which can also be purchased at a pet store.
Hamsters can become gentle and friendly pets, but remember that, despite all the advantages and ease of care, it is necessary to decide on the purchase of this animal responsibly, understanding that now you need to take care of another new member of the family, even the smallest.
